@vanden did you see the regex tester I posted the other day? Very helpful in building them. The secret is to buid them up from blocks

I didn't; been absent a while. I use the regex tester that ships with python. Yes, in steps. I repeat that secret to myself in between sobs.

YES. !FreeBSD has upgraded xapian from 1.0 to 1.2. Now to see how much faster notmuch runs (after rebuilding the DB of course) :D
