@romerogt: Even the latest driver from nVidia's site didn't improve the performance issues. Downgrading, however, did.

@romerogt: Thanks for the link. My machine booted (dreadfully slowly) with the nVidia drivers in the repo. The problem was performance.

Had to revert to !Ubuntu !Lucid (10.04) LTS in order to get my GeForce GTX 260 and sound card to work properly. Here's to late adoption!
