@amscomath: also, wolfram alpha is really convenient (try handing it some function or equation). makes me consider buying mathematica.

@amscomath: the ubuntu karmic maxima (and sage) packages are rather broken and i didn't want to fiddle around to fix them.

Wolfram alpha and www.sagenb.org are really useful when you don't have a working computer algebra system available. !math
