via @dinda Hulu for Linux. Well woot! http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop
-
@bkuhn Because there are no free equivalents, and proprietary means that more people can use more free software in the meantime.
-
@jzb, there are FaiF equivalents. #vlc, for example. You can use #MythTV to record and vlc to watch it. Why would you need #Hula ?
Marjolein Katsma and Joe Cool like this. -
@bkuhn Free software advocates would best spend time creating & promoting quality alternatives than denouncing proprietary software.
-
@jzb, Mostly agree (re: promote v. denounce); some denouncing's needed when otherwise pro-FLOSS ppl jump excitedly to new proprietary stuff.
Bradley M. Kuhn likes this. -
@bkuhn true, though to be honest, I think the bigger offense is that TV is crap, regardless of what software we use to view it.
-
@tychoish, most TV is crap; most of any class is crap. Some real diamonds in rough, though, on TV today. I watch them w/ FLOSS, of course.☺
-
@bkuhn having said that, I'm with you with regards to the "use real software" (i.e. vlc, etc.) to watch media as much as I can.
-
@bkuhn indeed,I gave up TV this summer&havent gotten back to it. in the final criticism of the TV indus.hulu is prtty low the list of crimes
-
RT @bkuhn why are we celebrating more proprietary software (#hulu for !gnu #Linux)? Sounds like a tragedy to me. Let's avoid it.
Bradley M. Kuhn and Stefan Kangas like this. -
@bkuhn Hulu has a lot of content that you may not be able to record. Some folks don't even have cable or maybe even a TV...
-
@bkuhn I don't know that denouncing is ever appropriate. You can't shame people into embracing your ethics. You can encourage and teach.
-
@jzb, I didn't shame anyone; I pointed out it's not cause for celebration, but rather lament. Disagreeing w/ people's opinions isn't shaming
-
@freemor The #hulu client for !linux is proprietary and depends on #Adobe #flash. There is no reason to welcome it in our community.

-
@teddks sorry, but I never saw !Linux as some kind of gated community that shuts out useful software for ideology
rpcutts and Chris Watkins like this. -
@teddks A *tragedy*? Show no sense of proportion that way is what makes people think of us as echo-chamber zealots.
-
@rxp: I agree with you. Plus I can careless about the source code to Hulu as I'm not going to change it. Not a critical app.
-
@rxp right, I think you should have right to choose, otherwise we'll become communists :D
-
@rxp As part of the !freesoftware community, the point of its existence is a fully free system, not a mere platform for slaveware.
Mackenzie and speeddefrost like this. -
@bkuhn I was responding to the "denouncing" thing, though maybe out of context since I used the word first...
-
@teddks That's about what I figured.. I'm not interested unless they want to support HTML5/ogg/theora
-
@jzb Good column! Partisans of "free" seem to feel that I should abandon video editing rather than use Final Cut Pro. That's _inane_.
-
Since the meta-discussion of denouncing proprietary software came up in conversation w/ @jzb, I wrote a blog post: http://ur1.ca/dddk #hulu
Evan Prodromou and Matthew Davidson like this. -
@bkuhn Linus disagrees w/ you about Bitkeeper, sees it as a completely "religious" issue. See the interview on last week's FLOSS Weekly.
-
@jzb Not sure I agree. What's the motivation to create Free alternatives if proprietary software is acceptable in the community?
-
@evan Flawed argument. By that logic Linux, Mozilla, OpenOffice etc would not exist. But they do.
-
@popey Mozilla? Are you suggesting that IE was acceptable? Or Netscape? I don't remember liking either of them very much
-
@popey I think the primary motivation for *many* FLOSS projects is to make a Free/Open Source alternative to proprietary software.
-
@moggers87 no. I'm merely saying that accepting proprietary software doesn't mean floss wont get written. there are many motivators.
-
@evan Sure, you're a prime example of that.I don't believe that means we should throw out proprietary stuff until free stuff is ready.
-
@evan agreed. However If the status quo closed source project is uber responsive to feature requests, no open source project starts up.
-
@evan whereas I take the position that FLOSS is written to make something better than prop alts can ever be.
-
@evan We're mostly here on identica because we support the community behind the dev, we get to request features, and talk to you.
-
@evan I don't think the motivation changes. If I'm developing free software, I want people to have the free alternative.
-
@bkuhn: How about you let me watch my He-Man on Hulu and stop caring about the software I put on my computer?
-
@jorge,You can do what you like on your computer;I won't try to stop you,but I'll speak out against practices that set back software freedom
-
@jorge +1.
-
@jorge why are you so angry and defensive? Are you jealous that some people have principles and you don't? Why all the anger?
-
@bkuhn: And I'll speak out on people who set back He-Man proliferation.
-
@spacehobo don't be a dick man.
-
@jorge, Sounds good to me. Although I'm going to guess software freedom is ultimately more important than He-Man in grand scheme of things.☺
-
@zelut Ah, I see you upvoted the anger and defensiveness. To each his own.
-
@spacehobo: Who says I'm angry? And what do "principles" have to do with software? ?It's just a computer. Lighten up, yeesh.
-
@spacehobo Ah, to have a video i recorded earlier :d
-
@x11r5 I'd like your opinion about the release of Hulu Desktop for Linux.
-
@jorge "just a computer" made a lot more sense in the 80s. Now they're critical to communication and expression.
-
@jorge You seemed to be fighting a straw man, as if you needed to defend your refusal of freedom.
-
@jorge people take principled stands on what to eat, wear, watch, read. Why is it so odd that people take a principled stand on technology?
Michael Gratton likes this. -
@spacehobo: On the contrary, He-Man is a defender of freedom and the oppressed.
Evan Prodromou likes this. -
@jorge I feel like you're trying your hardest to trivialize my point. It's very disappointing.
-
@jorge Ballmer is Beast-Man and Jobs is Skelletor. Who's Orco and Evil-Lynn?
JP Russell likes this. -
@patdavila LOL @ Jobs/Skelletor. That is sooo true! :)
-
@sobotka: Sorry, too busy trying to get He-Man signed in Detroit. He would be pretty brutal teamed up with Helm or Abdelkader
-
@evan I'd make a linux seti at home watching my daughter. Going to dinner for my oatmeal. Balls
Ryan Finnie likes this. -
@fo0bar Communist daughter?
-
@fo0bar Why should i feel that fixing a complex text
-
@spacehobo The "point" itself is trivial. "Don't use it because it's not free!" We get it. We disagree & don't like being told what to do.
-
@fo0bar or with SETI@home.
