!facebookfree working on a free facebook with @robmyers and @foocorp. details to follow.
-
@mattl Elgg is excellent software.
-
@evan -- not AGPL, sadly. that's what we're shooting for.
-
@mattl is it something about a new social media network or an article?
-
@mattl like gnewbook.org ?
-
@lxoliva -- want to avoid 'book' references ;)
-
@mattl Wow! That will be cool. Hope it takes off like #identica, have you seen http://ur1.ca/91jt btw? (It's a joke).
-
@mattl thats just a site that runs on Free Software, others can be built with the same software
-
@mattl theres also noosfero, AGPL, running on softwarelivre.org
-
@mattl: facepalm? :P
-
@mattl That's a huge, wasteful replication of work. Effort better spent hosting a service and polishing the software.
-
@evan -- maybe so, but i'd rather build something that people don't hoard.
-
@mattl past tense?
-
@mattl What do you mean by hoarding? Are you talking about data licensing? Federation?
-
@cwebber -- web service under the GPL would mean that any improvements wouldn't have to be shared.
-
@mattl Can you make additions that are AGPL'd?
-
@evan -- under GPLv2, no. Elgg is v2 only.
-
@shiny -- sure, who'll pay for the ticket?
-
@mattl A while back, I registered openthebook.org for this purpose, but I think it's since expired. Plus I know how you feel about "open" ;)
-
@mattl maybe have a look at mahara.org ? it's inspired by elgg but it's GPLv3+
-
@mattl Ah, okay.
-
@mattl Could you not convince them to relicense/dual license?
-
@mattl have you thought about building upon laconica? e.g., http://identi.ca/notice/6217876
-
@hunger nope. i think if i'm going to start from scratch, i'd like to be able to assign all the code to the FSF for protection too.
-
@mattl wait, did you mean, "i think i'm going to start from scratch" (no "if")?
-
@mjjzf With XeTeX good (ArabXeTeX) but with "plain" LaTeX, hmmm, pretty complicated, at least for me.
-
@hunger yeah, it's not an 'if' -- starting from scratch is the way to go.
-
@mattl oh boy! are you planning on federation? compatibility with omb? good luck, and keep us all updated!
-
@hunger federation sure, not sure about omb.
-
@mjjzf -- afaik no source has been released
-
@mattl Oh my. I've been looking for a Free (distributed) facebook for a long time. Great it's finally started. Use DiSo et.al !facebookfree
-
@evan Elgg is not very useful as it's not federated. But it could need a facelift too, yes.
-
Puzzling what why @robmyers saw fit to create @randomcolour ?
-
@andyc /19
-
@andyc opps, anyway i think i have defensio working
-
@andyc I just thought there should be more colour in the world. As a web service...
-
@mattl Why can't you take something on BSD like a http://pinaxproject.com/ , relicense to AGPL and start builing from there?
-
@velmont Maybe it makes more sense to use Laconica as a base, then.
-
@velmont yet the essence of a social network is there, i.e., I want to know what my friends are doing.
-
@robmyers How about adding a digital signature to the @randomcolour dents (24-bit, of course) Then people might use for their profile design
-
@robmyers Maybe even the occasional 3-colour palette by @randomcolour ?
-
@mattl if you change your mind: i think #buddypress technically uses a generic gpl, and thus may be compatible with agplv3
-
@mattl Is anything happening on this - wouldn't like to miss it out from my article: http://ur1.ca/0b6ty
