I can restart GNOME Shell with Alt-F2 r and get the sound icon back in my panel! Volume keys don't work still.

A quick kill -9, pulseaudio restart, and now I have sound. But GNOME Shell doesn't recover gracefully -- no volume keys, no sound icon.

It's our dear friend the Flash plugin (I assume; fuser shows "chromium-browser") that prevents my pulseaudio from finding sound cards!

I can start pulseaudio, but it fails to find my sound card. mplayer, on the other hand, can find it just fine.
