check file permissions. maybe the file/directory is immutable? check the man pages for chattr.

@dandart It's a beagleboard. My laptop doesn't have a serial port so I use a Serial-to-USB adapter.

the command was cu -l /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 115200 . I fixed it using chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0 . I mentioned it because it's quite funny.

@sijp, even root is subject to some limitations. (see /usr./bin/*attr; se linux, etc)

@sijp if file related, the I think user permissions still apply to root, e.g. to make the file writeable, chmod u+w as root
