Wussed out and went crawling back to ubuntu. I need a functional machine right now. At least I learned a few things installing arch.

Arch is installed on the lappy and I can access the tubes using eth0. Still trying to config wireless.

@fabsh Glad to hear you're enjoying Android. I've been using the Dev Phone since March. Good stuff. Only complaints have been hardware.
